If you love noir mysteries, Detective: City of Angels will plunge you straight into the dark, gritty streets of 1940s Los Angeles. This story-driven, scenario-heavy game for 1–5 players centers on mystery, investigation, and deception. Most players take on the role of LAPD homicide detectives, eager for glory and willing to bend the rules to solve the case. You’ll interrogate suspects, hide evidence, and even hire informants to gain an edge.

One player can take on the role of The Chisel, whose goal is to mislead and confuse the detectives through bluffing, misdirection, and sometimes outright lies. The great thing is that you don’t have to include a Chisel at all. City of Angels works perfectly in fully cooperative mode, with all players working together as detectives to solve the case.

How the Game Plays

The game uses the innovative ARC (Adaptive Response Card) system to create the feel of real interrogations. Suspects do not simply give scripted answers. Instead, responses are carefully chosen, forcing detectives to constantly question what they are being told. When playing with a Chisel, challenging a suspect incorrectly gives them leverage, making the case even harder. In full cooperative mode, the focus is entirely on uncovering evidence, following leads, and piecing together the mystery as a team.

Each crime comes with detailed casebooks for detectives and The Chisel if used. Investigating the city, uncovering evidence, and revealing hidden suspects keeps each session dynamic, tense, and engaging.

Perfect for Two or More

This is where City of Angels truly shines. The game works beautifully with four players, but cooperative play with two is especially rewarding. Searching for clues and solving the case together creates a deep sense of connection. You must communicate constantly, share suspicions, negotiate which leads to follow, and remain open to each other’s perspectives. Not everyone will always think the same way, so you learn to adapt, accept different interpretations, and collaborate effectively. This makes the game a genuine exercise in teamwork.

It is also a perfect date night game. You get to see how your partner thinks, understand their reasoning, and work together to solve the case. The sense of shared accomplishment when the mystery is finally solved is deeply satisfying.

Immersive Storytelling Like No Other

The immersion in City of Angels is unmatched. It can be more engaging than an escape room or even watching a thriller together. You are fully absorbed in the story - I have even dreamed about scenarios after playing. Among hundreds of scenario-driven games I have tried, this one stands out as a top-tier experience, blending narrative depth, puzzle-solving, and social interaction.

Final Verdict

Whether you play with a Chisel or fully cooperatively, City of Angels delivers a thrilling, story-driven mystery that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It is a must-try for anyone who loves narrative puzzles, suspense, and deep player interaction.
