The Masterpiece of Madrid is a fantastic scenario that perfectly captures the gritty noir atmosphere that makes City of Angels such a unique and engaging board game. From the very beginning, the story pulls you into a web of deception, ambition, and moral ambiguity set against the stylish backdrop of 1940s Los Angeles.
What really stood out to me was the surprisingly sapphic element woven into the narrative.
I absolutely loved that. It’s rare, especially in a story-driven board game like this, to encounter an unexpected lesbian plotline. The inclusivity felt completely natural and organic, never forced or performative. It was handled with spontaneity and authenticity, and I was genuinely pleasantly surprised. I want to emphasize how refreshing it is to see queerness implemented so organically in a scenario-driven board game. That doesn’t happen often, and it truly elevates the experience.
Beyond that, this is, because of a few special elements I unfortunately can’t reveal due to spoilers, one of the best scenarios in City of Angels so far. The story is incredibly well constructed, layered, and gripping. The investigation feels meaningful at every step, with twists and developments that keep you on edge. Even though I played this scenario about three years ago, I still vividly remember how thrilling and tense it felt. That says a lot about its quality and impact.
The scenario also makes excellent use of the game’s strengths: sharp interrogations, psychological tension, and the constant feeling that every decision matters. Whether you’re playing as a Detective or the Chisel, the interactions feel dynamic and charged.
Overall, The Masterpiece of Madrid is an absolute standout. It combines strong narrative design, emotional impact, and inclusive storytelling into one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had with City of Angels. Highly recommended. A true top-tier scenario.
